T1 Glossary #1

SPATIAL PLANNING- the relationship between built forms and how new ones should relate
URBAN DESIGN- built forms in a dense city like environment
DESIGN- a form that has been considered
PLANNING- thinking ahead and considering impacts
CONTEXT- the existing scale and relationships between built forms (or the lack of them)
SCALE- the proportion of forms in relation to those around them
CONSERVATION- preserving or enhancing historical or modern key buildings for future generations and to maintain integrity
RE-DEVELOPMENT- transforming an existing site into a new form, often with a new direction
POLICY- local or national government guidance on best practice for development
LANDSCAPE DESIGN- creating a definite break in the built environment, often including planting, sculpture and break out space
